Get Your Insider’s Guide to Photoshop World!

Published August 5, 2011 by Tom Castaneda | Comments (10)

If you’ve attended Photoshop World, you’ve probably heard all about the 4+ alumni in attendance. If you haven’t attended, our 4+ alumni are the die-hard PSW attendees who come to the conference year-after-year. Some of them (I won’t mention any names!) even attend the West Coast AND East Coast editions in the same year. Well, one of those oh-so-awesome members of the elite 4+ Club—NAPP member Kevin Stohlmeyer—has created a super-duper guide to the conference that can be used by first-time attendees, as well as return attendees! Thank you Kevin for sharing your insight into the must-attend photography, lighting and Photoshop conference!

“An Insider’s Guide to Photoshop® World”

This year will be my fifth overall Photoshop® World conference (fourth in a row at Vegas) and each year, I meet new folks who have a lot of questions about the conference and Las Vegas in general. They want the “inside scoop” on where to go, how to get around, etc. So I started thinking about this project last year and here is the result – “An Insider’s Guide to Photoshop® World” with helpful tips, hints, and insights not only for the conference itself but also getting around the hotel and Las Vegas. I’ve even included a section on “Eats” featuring some great bargains and my picks for the best restaurants (that I’ve been to) in Las Vegas. I hope you find this helpful and that it makes your Photoshop® World experience the best it can possibly be!

The Networking Starts Now!

Published July 12, 2011 by Brandon Jacoby | Comments (0)

Hey Everyone!

Remember how in my previous post I mentioned that networking at Photoshop World is a big thing?
Well that doesn’t start at PSW… It starts right now.

Something I would majorly suggest is, get yourself on Twitter. Not only is it a great way to get connected with fellow attendees before and during PSW, it’s also a fun way to keep track of the #PSW hashtag.

So go out and set yourself up with a Twitter account, and happy tweeting! :)

Photoshop World For Designers!

Published July 6, 2011 by Photoshop World | Comments (1)

First, let me be up front. I am not a photographer by trade, I am a graphic designer. Having attended Photoshop World for several years, I can tell you that if you are a designer and use Photoshop or Lightroom in any part of your career, then you need to attend Photoshop World.

If you think that Photoshop World is just for photographers, you are missing out. Sure there are award-winning photographers, photojournalists and lots of photo-related topics. But Photoshop World is so much more. It is an all-encompassing experience with world-class instructors from all walks of life, digital gurus willing to show you their secrets, and unparalleled access to your Photoshop peers. Where else can you have your portfolio reviewed and discussed by Photoshop Hall-of-Famer Bert Monroy?

From learning amazing 3D with “Photoshop Guy” Corey Barker to new developments in InDesign from Adobe Evangelist Terry White, there is something for everyone. And yes, I said InDesign. In fact, a lot of the Creative Suite is covered during the conference – Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, InDesign, even Twitter is a topic!

Strictly speaking from a designer standpoint, I believe that Photoshop World is the best conference I have been to in years. Don’t get me wrong, I do attend some photography-centric courses, even if I don’t quite understand all of the techniques being covered. But I still walk away from the session inspired and eager to learn more about the topic presented. That’s the great thing about Photoshop World – something for everyone and a chance to expand your skills.

My only regret is having to choose between all the great sessions. But not to worry – if you miss a session you have a great resource at your disposal as an attendee – the Photoshop World Workbook. It contains session notes, tips, techniques, and details from the sessions presented at the conference. This is the biggest conference workbook you will ever find. Trust me – after day two your arm will start to fall off. Bring a bag to carry it.

This is also your chance to network with other Photoshop enthusiasts. There is the NAPP Tweetup (which is always a blast), the After-Hours party (held this year at Gameworks), and the coveted Midnight Madness. Another great aspect is the PSW Expo, held during the conference. It has a multitude of vendors from publishers to software companies (including Adobe), showing you their latest innovations. If you want to really get some mad props for your work, you can also enter the Photoshop World Guru Awards competition. Each year, the entries inspire, amaze and wow attendees.

Whew! With all of this going on, no matter how experienced you are or what you do for a living, if you use Photoshop you should be here.

Yes, You Want To Be There!

Published May 17, 2011 by Brandon Jacoby | Comments (1)

So we are still a few months away from Photoshop World and you may still be on the fence about going. One of the main questions you’re probably asking yourself is “Do I want to go? Is it worth it?”…. Well let me decide for you — Yes! Yes you want to go, and yes it is 100% worth it.

One of the main reasons that I like it so much, is the networking you gain from it. Besides all the incredible learning, what is better than being surrounded by thousands of creative people who all share the same interests as you.

It’s hard for me to describe how awesome of an experience you will have if you go. However, I will say this – You will be missing out if you’re not there :)

If you’re a first-time attendee this year, here are some tips on planning your trip…

Don’t get there the day-of: I would say get there a day or two early just so you can attend any events, like the Tweet-up or any other gatherings. It’s also really great just to start the experience as soon as you can.

Bring your camera!: This was a huge mistake I made when I attended the first time. Whether it’s for a shootout on the expo floor, or so you can take a picture with an instructor… Just make sure you have it ;)

Bring a backpack: When walking around the expo floor, you will find yourself picking up flyers, brochures, catalogs, etc. I must say, it really is a pain to carry all of it around with you in your hands. A great thing to do, would be to buy a Pro Pass when you register… Then you get a fancy NAPP backpack (along with other great things too).

So I hope I helped you decide to be there. Thanks for reading!

Top 10 Photoshop World Survival Tips

Published March 9, 2011 by Kent Weakley | Comments (1)

Photoshop World is exactly three weeks away… And the anticipation is building for this year’s Photoshop-meets-fashion event!

If you haven’t yet registered, what are you waiting for? Act now!

If you’ve already signed up, yay! Now start planning your time with us!

Our guest blogger Kent Weakley has compiled his special Top 10 Photoshop World Survival Tips

Top 10 Photoshop World Survival Tips

1. Attire

Wear comfortable shoes, and layers of clothing or at least an extra sweater. The A/C can vary by room and sometimes is cold.

2. Sustenance

Bring snacks, save a few bucks and pack a lunch. Also it’s a good idea to bring water.

3. Download the PSW app

Plan your schedule ahead of time on your iPad or iPhone.

4. Use the Photoshop World Bible!

Resolve schedule conflicts with the handy, yet large, PSW Workbook. Be sure to review the 800+ pages of class notes for content hints.

5. Arrive early

You’ll be able to sit closer to the front, get organized, and relax, if you arrive early.

6. Pack light

While there’s room for everyone, it’s not easy or comfortable with big bags and stuff spread all around.

7. Take notes

Take lots of notes, be on the look out for little hidden gems.

8. Be a good neighbor

This may seem obvious, but turn off your phone, be quiet, don’t shuffle around during presentations.

9. Change it up

Attend some sessions out of your comfort zone or normal routine. You’ll be surprised what you’ll discover!

10 Pace yourself

Be prepared to start having creative thoughts like you’ve never imagined. And, if you’re not already, plan on becoming hooked on learning more and more about Photoshop on a regular basis.

You will be surrounded by Photoshop knowledge, but don’t fear. Go confidently and steady, make no false moves and you will survive. Actually you’ll do more than survive, your Photoshop skills, productivity, and creativity are sure to thrive and grow by leaps and bounds.

This will be my fifth PSW and this list represents many of the things I think of heading into PSW. Have you attended? If you have, what would you add? Please leave me a comment below.

Enjoy and I’ll see you at Photoshop World!

Year after year, we get feedback from Photoshop World attendees about how the inspired instruction during the three-day conference has helped them improve their photography, lighting and Photoshop skills and unlock their creativity.
